Beyond the Curtain
This photo is of cascading water with a tall building in the background. In creating this work, I was able to capture emphasis. The strips of water are emphasized and the building behind is out of focus. This photo also depicts color. It is full of vibrant blue hues in the water, sky, and reflections on the building. The main principle of design demonstrated is movement. One can almost see the water flowing down.
This photo wasn't planned or anticipated. I had just watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at the Metreon in San Francisco, and after was snapping shots at the Yerba Buena Gardens right outside. It was late morning and the lighting was perfect. I started playing with shutter speeds while photographing the waterfall, and this is the best photo that came out. I was trying to convey the movement of the water by trying out all the different shutter speeds, but I felt that this picture captured it the best. Water moves so fast that you can barely see it. This photo freezes it so we can see the movement that we can't normally see.
I believe this photo is successful because of the different elements of art and principles of design used. I believe the framing and amount of zoom is perfect. The photo is also unique; one wouldn't normally think to see water forming a curtain over a building on a bright sunny day. Overall I am very satisfied with this photo.

All that Glitters is Not Gold
This photo is of the head of a man painted in silver dancing in Union Square, San Francisco. The main element of art is color. The man's sunglasses are bright orange and the rest of him is silver with hints of blue. Another element is form. This photo also captures emphasis with the focus on the man's face and contrast between the bright orange and muted silver colors.
I shot this photo in mid-afternoon. The man was dancing to a song while a large crowd gathered around him to watch. An activity like this is normal in San Francisco and thus, through this photo, I was trying to convey the feel and experiences of the city and the people in it. I kept snapping photos at different angles, zooms, and poses. Many of my photos came out terrible, but some, like this one, were perfect.
This portrait is successful because of the angle and rule of thirds used. I like how the man isn't completely in the frame and his expression with his closed eyes convey the emotion.

Willy
This photo depicts Willy, an adorable dog, while he watches a treat. I was able to capture emphasis while creating this work with the focus on Willy's face. Besides this I also captured texture. One can almost touch and feel the soft fur and the wet nose. This photo is also an example of asymmetrical balance with the weight on the left side of the frame.
I took this photograph during the summer while visiting family friends in Oregon. It was late morning with the sun streaming down and my sister was petting Willy while he was sitting in her lap. He kept trying to get up so someone got a treat and held it up so he would stay. I grabbed my camera and started snapping photos. His eyes intent on the treat helped create a good, intense feeling of wanting.
This photograph is successful because of the emotion and angle of the photo. When looking at this, I can always feel the emotion of Willy. The close up angle also adds to this feeling.

Something Beautiful
This photo is of a brown, dying vine with one white flower in focus attached to the top. When taking this photo, I captured texture. The vine appears rough and hard while the flower appears soft and smooth. In addition, I captured emphasis with the focus on the flower. I also captured the principle of design, asymmetrical balance. The curved shape of the plant puts more weight on the right side of the photo.
I took this photo at Edgewood Park in Redwood City during late afternoon. I was snapping photos of different types of plants when this flower caught my eye. I loved how the flower appeared to be growing on a brown, dying plant. Because of this, the photo is trying to communicate how things can grow amidst destruction and still be beautiful.
I believe this photo is successful because of the subject and composition. The beauty is emphasized and the destruction is blurred. I love the muted colors of this photo, and I believe it is inspiring.

Only the Outline
This photo captures a silhouetted tree whit the vibrant blue sky in the background. It displays contrast as the main principle of design. The black tree contrasts with the vibrant blue of the sky. This photo also is an example of color. There are a minimal amount of colors in this photo, but both stand out. In addition, this photo is also an example of form as seen in the tree.
When taking this photo I used a very fast shutter speed and positioned my camera so that the tree was directly in front of the sun. This created the silhouette effect. I took this photo while on a hike in the mountains during mid afternoon. I was trying out different shutter speeds and this photo came out the best.
I believe this photo is successful because of the contrasting colors and position of the tree. Its different distinct branches and lack of leaves make it a better silhouette and make the photo intriguing.
